Good neighbors are there for each other, no matter what time of year. Here are some tips to help you save energy and enjoy a safe and comfortable holiday season.

Holiday energy savings

  • Switch to LED decorative lights. They use up to 75% less energy and last longer.
  • Plug lights into timers. Timers automatically switch off your display late at night or when no one is home.
  • Get creative. Make handmade decorations that don't use energy, such as a wreath for your door.
  • Bake efficiently. Bake multiple batches of cookies or more than one pie at a time to conserve energy.
  • Leave your home efficient. If traveling, shut off lights and electronics and set the thermostat to vacation mode.

Holiday safety tips

  • Before hanging your lights, inspect them for frayed wires, broken sockets or other signs of wear and tear.
  • For outdoor decorating, only use lights and power strips that are approved for outdoor use.
  • Be careful when using metal staples or nails as fasteners. They can damage protective insulation covering wires.
  • Avoid connecting more than three strings of lights together unless instructions say otherwise.
  • Keep real trees away from heat sources. Make sure artificial trees are labeled as fire-resistant.
  • When using extension cords, avoid routing them under rugs or near walkways.
  • Turn off lights and other decorations late at night or whenever you are away from home.

From one neighbor to another, happy holidays.
